Put Your Goat-Foot Forward!
As I look back on last year, it seems like the one sign who didn’t do badly is Capricorn. How does Capricorn get everything they want? How do they keep their focus and not lose their mettle? Something about the state of the world and the repeated traumas of last year feel like an overwhelming loss to me. I have to keep reminding myself that there is actually so much further to go before I’m at rock bottom. That staying still isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Enter the wisdom of the Capricorn Sea Goat.
It’s time like these I look to the wisdom of Capricorn: steadfast, calculating, trustworthy, and some seriously valuable hidden assets (alls it takes is a Scorpio to uncover them). Capricorn will never run out of steam or let themselves get to any form of zero.
The Capricorn baseline is most Aries’ success and Libra’s envy. When Cap feels like they have nothing, they might temporarily freakout, but they don’t lose their cool for long. They get out a sheet of paper, check their bank balance, and make a plan. This is the energy I invoke.
Interesting this Cappy trait of setting long-term goals coincides with the tradition of New Year’s Resolutions. It’s a practice that dates back to the ancient Babylonians in 400BC. In 46AD, Caesar changed the date from Spring Equinox to Jan 1, probably to accommodate Sun-Worshipping pagans celebrating the Solstice.
Offerings and oaths were given to Gods, Lords, and Rulers; taxes were paid; contracts were re-signed; inventory and final preparations were made for winter months ahead. If that isn’t total Cap vibes, I don’t know what is. Since the energy is there, I pull from it.
First Decan Capricorn (Dec 21-31)
On Dec 21, when the sun moves into Capricorn, I begin my annual self-Capp-ing bootcamp. I spend the last days of the year in a retrospective of the previous year and years before. I list out the pros and cons, weigh my wins against the losses.
I’ll also look at previous years’ things I wanted but didn’t get, and whether they’re worth tackling this year. If not, into the “bucket list” they go. Some things (like hot air balloons in Cappadoccia) do have to wait.
After a little researching and soul-searching, I’ll devise a list of 3-5 things I’d like to accomplish this year. It may not seem like much, but we only have four quarters a year and three months a quarter! It’s pretty hard to do anything major in three months or to multi-task five different projects in a year. It takes a lot of planning and commitment, so don’t overwhelm yourself!
If you’re new to this practice, I recommend choosing THREE very distinct goals. I’ll give you an example:
- Obtain 300hr Yoga Teacher Training Certificate
- Open on a Small-Scale Farm Business
- Publish one blog post a week
Take your time to refine your goals. It’s fine if you start with “#1 Get healthy” but the final Goal should be something along the lines of “#1 Commit to a cardio routine 3x a week”. Make sure it’s an achievable goal, or you’ll never be satisfied.
Second Decan Capricorn (Jan 1-10)
Within these three MAJOR goals are lots of little steps to discover and decide. (Where do I want to take my yoga training course? How much will it cost? Are there any prerequisites? When is it? And so forth.)
The First the days of January is the who/what/where/when/why/how. Now you have your major goals for the year, break it down into actionable steps. Do this before you run out of steam and forget your dreams. Cap season is about long-term magic: earthly intention setting.
Continuing with my example: I know when, where, and how much the course is. Now I must make sure I’ll have the required funds in the necessary time frame, enough free time to read the literature before the course, and a plan for my room and board. Since I also have a partner, now is about the time I would bring him into my plans. Explain that Dreams are now becoming Reality, and I plan to go through with it and need his support.
I also make sure I’ve got a trusty planner to help me map my whole year. I’m currently using this Good Witch’s Planner and I love it.
At this juncture, I tweak anything needing tweaking, and then set about putting it in my monthly calendar. My first quarter is always the busiest quarter of the year. I keep the last half of my year light, since everything I do takes twice as long as I’d like. Whatever you do, don’t block your year out after July. Change is the only constant thing we can count on.
Third Decan Capricorn (Jan 11-20)
From January 10-20, I’ll go over my plan watching for any mistakes or omissions. Next, I’ll make a “cast list” of people or businesses to contact so the following quarter runs smoothly. I’ll find their emails/phone numbers and draft 1-3 lines as to why I am reaching out. Also now’s the time to list any more small details that have come to mind.
By this time, the idea of what I want and how I’m going get there is clear. I devise a mantra for each goal and repeat it internally throughout the day. Examples: just upon waking, when in the shower, or anytime I find myself zoning out or jolting into consciousness.
The Capricorn New Moon is a perfect time to set your intentions for the coming year. Making the oath to yourself, to your ancestors, and to the Universe truly seals the deal. I dare anyone to go against the fate they’ve set for themselves! Be careful what you wish for, because with these tools, it will always come to you.
Happy New Year, my friends! May all your plans go off without a hitch.
